Project R2-D2 - Build Update #01 - Greebles & Dome Accents

Following on from the last build status post, the past couple of weeks have been heavily focused on two things: getting all the greebles fitted across the body, and finishing the dome accent details.

Greebles — Almost There

This has been the most time-consuming phase so far. Getting every panel detail placed, painted, and seated correctly takes a surprising amount of effort, but the payoff is huge.

The main body is now carrying most of its greebles:

  • The large circular thruster/booster greeble on the front lower body is fully fitted with the turbine blade detail painted in silver and blue
  • The rear panel now has the circular fan vent, along with the two smaller rivet-style greebles and the vertical arm detail
  • The lower front octagonal port has its inner greeble detail installed
  • The horizontal blue stripe panels and louver vents across the body are all on and painted
  • Both utility arms are in place — the short gripper arm and the longer interface arm with its detailed tip

The body is really starting to look like R2 now rather than a white cylinder.

Dome Accents

The dome has come a long way. The blue panel sections are all painted, the front face detail is done — holoprojector circles, front logic display surround, and the side booster knob are all fitted. From the front it looks very sharp.

The inside of the dome ring also has the full greeble band assembled, with the central circular detail flanked by the rectangular panel greebles on either side. There’s still quite a bit of wiring running through there but it’s all getting managed.

What’s Next

Panels and wiring are the main things left before a full assembly. Still some open sections on the body that need closing up once the electronics are sorted. Getting close though.
